Vacation 2022: 34 percent more bookings than in the previous year

Hamburg, 4. January 2022. – Longing for normality, being relaxed, vacation: The Germans create themselves to the beginning of the year anticipation and are planning vacation for the year 2022. Vacation home specialist Belvilla, to which also TUI Ferienhaus belongs, has recorded 34 percent more vacation bookings to date for 2022 than in the same period last year for 2021. Here it is noticeable: the trend still goes to domestic journeys as well as vacation in the neighboring country.

Current booking figures for spring 

To date, five times as many bookings of German guests (+500 percent) have been received for the month of April as in the same period last year for April 2021. The most frequent destination of Germans for the month of April is domestic, as in 2021: This year, Germany is in the lead with 41 percent, followed by the Netherlands (29 percent) and Austria (12 percent). Overall, bookings are currently not at the same level as last year, but individual regions are more in demand than in 2021: To date, Belvilla has recorded an increase in bookings by German guests for Italy (+68 percent), Croatia (+21 percent) and France (+6 percent) for May compared to the same period last year for May 2021.   

Summer bookings 2022: trend towards domestic vacations continues

And how do the bookings for the summer of 2022 look? Here Belvilla registers up-to-date two contrary trends: Many guests book – for this year the vacation home specialist registers 25 percent more summer bookings of German guests than at the same time last year for 2021. Others cancel their summer vacation 2022. Hanita van der Meer, Director PR and Communication with Belvilla, explains: “The incidences rise at present everywhere again, Omikron dominates the happening, the restrictions became again more strict in many places. That unsettles many guests and tempts them to cancel the summer vacation, even if the stays are very far away. We could already observe this trend in the last Corona waves. Nevertheless, we look positively to the summer. Our tip: secure favorite accommodation now and still remain flexible – for several accommodations, we can continue to offer the possibility of free cancellation up to 21 days before arrival in coordination with the homeowners.”

And what destinations are most popular with holiday home vacationers in summer 2022? One trend that will continue in summer 2022: Domestic vacations. 37 percent of German Belvilla guests are planning to stay in their own country in July or August. When it comes to summer vacations abroad, the following countries are particularly popular with Belvilla guests: Austria (19 percent), followed by the Netherlands (17 percent). But also Southern Europe, for example France (7 percent) or Italy (7 percent), are quite in demand among Belvilla guests.
